D-day

19/6 20111

D –day  (finally)

Location; Luzern, Switzerland

390 kilometers on the log.
Bike arrived this morning at 07.00 hrs. It is good to be together again.

I was hot to go so I hit the tarmac shortly after 08.00. I just fixed the most necessary adjustments in the packing. As I already lost 24 hrs I wanted to make up some time.

Today’s route took me north towards Alessandria and the up to the Swiss border near Locarno. Then onwards to entrance of the Gotthard tunnel. It was an eerie experience to drive in a tunnel for so many kilometers, but well worth it.

The bike purrs like cat and we are eating miles together.
Stopping tonight at Alfa hotel in Luzern.

Tomorrow I will set course for the Rheine Valley, Germany.

D-day minus 1

18/6/2011

Savona  17.00  local time

D-day minus one

What a wonderful day with plenty of sunshine. But what a waste of time!

I could have been hammering on through the Gotthard tunnel and into the land of chocolate, clocks and army knives.

The good people of Savona have plenty of dogs they walk about with, they always say Bon Giorno even to strangers and they don’t like to speak English. The coffee is excellent at Euro 1.40 for a double espresso (served with a smile!!!)

I just received notice that the man from the port agency will pick me up at 07.00 hrs tomorrow (Sunday). This means I could be on my jolly way in the early hours of the morning.

The next report will be from Switzerland.

If you have nothing else to do, like me you, you can always log into your bank account and donate some money for our good cause.

D-day minus 2

17/6 20111

D-day minus 2

Location; Savona, Italy.

Stranded!
There is an old condition in the shipping trade;  ”God willing and weather permitting”. I don’t know what came into play here, but the Grande Ellade is delayed until Sunday 19/6 morning.

I cannot complain as I stay in a good hotel and there is plenty of excellent food around.  The only reservation is that I will be about 24 hrs late out of Savona as the plan was to get started on Saturday morning 18/6.
Apart from this minor problem, all is well It is just so frustrating to be waiting.

D-day minus 8

10/6 2011

D-day minus 8.

The motorcycle is now in transit to Savona Italy. The journey will take 8 days.

Thanks to the superb service from Manda Navigation and their team, all the paperwork and loading went like a dream. These guys are truly professionals.
It took only 2 hours before all documents were finalized and the bike was loaded onboard MV Grande Ellade en route to Savona Italy.

Only one incident, the helmet fell on the tarmac, which ruined the locking mechanism for the visor. With a bit of luck Ttommys motor, Larnaca will fix it in a few days or it will have to be replaced.

It feels a bit empty without the Varadero in the driveway but we will meet soon again.

PS the bike has been officially christened to “Malte the Cat” for this trip.

Welcome to "Follow Goran"

Rotarian Goran Svensson always wanted to ride his bike from Cyprus to Sweden and this year, now that he is retired,  his dream becomes a reality!

On June 10 Goran embarks on his journey on his beloved bike, a brand new Honda Varadero XL 1000 to travel from Cyprus on his bike through Switzerland, Germany, Denmark and finally, Sweden.

A dream of a lifetime though acquired a new purpose when Goran announced to his Rotary Club, Nicosia Aspelia in District 2450, his wish: to use this trip as an opportunity to fundraise for a specific cause. As a true Rotarian, Goran inspires us all, in combining his lifelong dream with fundraising for the Alzheimer's Day Care Center in Nicosia, Cyprus. The Center was inaugurated in 2004/2005 by Rotary Club Nicosia Aspelia and Rotary Club Nicosia.

Rotary Aspelia, in collaboration with Rotaract Aspelia, invites you to sponsor Goran's 5 day trip across Europe to Sweden between June 18 and June 23, 2011 and travel with him, virtually  of course, as he transverses Europe to reach Sweden!
